One Person planting One Tree per Year
The project started in 23 November 2009, at Monsanto the largest natural park in Lisbon, Portugal on The Native Forests Day. It was a gathering day for friends, conscious parents, children, grandparents, uncles, cousins, nephews, coworkers and neighbors planting 1000 trees with the objective of one person planting one tree.
It is a success and since then a citizenship movement emerged encouraged by how a simple idea could turn a major initiative.
The challenge was on how to involve the public authorities, responsible for choosing the land, the technical and logistical components of the project and the acquisition of the trees, on the other side the project had to mobilize the persons and incite their positive and ecological attitude. At the end, it was concluded that this type of partnership can be simple, easy to implement and to replicate.
From that time on several initiatives were undertaken, from forest promotion and conservation to civic education actions. All these events promoted the sustainability of native forests and autochthonous species.
In April 25, 2012 the movement of citizens led to the constitution of an Association, extending its social and environmental responsibilities. The Association developed a more comprehensive set of partnerships and initiatives.
The dream of this project is that each person plant one tree per year. The association creates the initiatives and the means, extending it to all citizens in Portugal, and may it be a model to the World.
The Association Plant One Tree constitutes itself as a platform for social mobilization. It contributes to the promotion, preservation and protection of the biophysical heritage, for safeguarding biodiversity and ecosystems (in particular on forests and with native species) encouraging an active citizenship participation; sustainability, social and environmental responsibility.
The Association shall develop activities in the areas described below. These activities should be translated into business models and replicated by local groups:
| Collection of seeds, sowing, germination and plantation of native species. Protection, conservation and promotion of related ecosystems;
| Recovery, valorization and promotion of the assets associated with the areas of intervention;
| To promote and encourage educational and training activities for citizenship and sustainability and for social and environmental accountability, whether educational, cultural, recreational or of scientific nature;
| Provide consulting and training services to public and private bodies, as well as to the general public;
| Editing publications and other recreational, cultural or scientific materials;
| Implementation of projects supported by the above mentioned objectives.
The project main goal is to set up and organize tree plantations aimed at public and private entities, families and groups of friends. The proposed activities should integrate content aimed at raising awareness, education and training for participatory citizenship and sustainability and social and ecological responsibility. The project should work as a social mobilization platform connecting the civil society and public entities.
The project seeks to establish partnerships and agreements with entities and between entities that fit in this field of action, from a scientific point of view, operational and strategic cooperation promoting synergies.
The main offering resides on the proposed activities of tree plantations. Depending on the objectives and the target audience structured package can be put in place that including activities such as collecting seeds, sowing and germination, planting and conservation and maintenance of spaces (re)forested, allowing a lasting and effective connection of partners and participants with the chosen areas, their management and enjoyment.
The partnership with public entities can and should emerge a multitude of other activities, such as opening actions of boilers and watering, weed removal, cleaning and selective removal of waste, maintenance of leisure spaces associated to green spaces, recreational and pedagogical activities, which promote the enjoyment of spaces. Specific activities can also be developed from civic and environmental training and awareness adapted to the target audience and partners, e.g. trails for heritage interpretation, exhibitions, lectures, trainings, workshops, movies, plays, themed parties and birthday picnics, holiday camps, among many others.
All activities must be associated with a multidisciplinary component of learning and civic and environmental awareness in support of participatory citizenship, adapted to the profile of those involved. Contents of all partnerships, protocols, activities, initiatives and actions shall promote the enjoyment and protection of forest areas and the native species, the environment and ecology corporate and sustainability of natural resources.
The project develops a set of syllabus and training actions in partnership with educational institutions directed at employees and technical staff of the partners, members of local organizations and collaborators, in order to strengthen the diffusion and the scope of the project.
The project was designed to create a model that is simple to implement and easy to replicate at the national level by local groups affiliated to counterparts.
The Constitution of a local group should partner with a public entity that has a space subject to forestation for public enjoyment. The entity will recognize the link to the official list of autochthonous species, ensure the maintenance of forested areas and comply with existent rules established within the framework of the management and planning of forests. It should also promote and encourage the use of these areas.
The project seeks to give the opportunity to every citizen to get involved in its initiatives, which aim to promote the natural heritage and biodiversity, create and retrieve natural spaces, reduce environmental damage and restore the ecological function of these spaces.
The implementation of these initiatives enables you to generate social and economic gains through the promotion of public spaces, creating green jobs, environmental and social responsibility of public and private organizations and social groups, as well as from participatory citizenship and ecological and environmental awareness.
The project offers an opportunity of active and conscious involvement in ecological recovery of natural spaces and thus foster the transition culture, which aims to achieve a paradigm of social and ecological sustainability.
The project brings together on its volunteer bank more than 2,750 entries and on Facebook more than 31,000 people.
